Folding solar panel array

August 28, 2023

Solar panel devices are generally not too sculpted, but a team from NASA has developed a very elegant solar panel device. Brian Trease, a mechanical engineer from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the research team of Brigham Young University and an origami expert, Robert Lang, jointly developed this prototype device that integrates technology with plastic arts.

The device using this structure in the concept can be folded into a prototype with a diameter of 8.9 feet and expanded to an 82-foot array. As a proof of concept, the team has created a desktop-sized prototype with an extension of up to 4 feet that can be used to demonstrate the concept of device folding and expansion.

Trease said, "This is a fusion of art, culture and technology." He believes that solar cells can be deployed in various spacecraft and applied to low-cost satellites. At present, the device is still in the prototype stage, and the direction of team development may symbolize the future development direction of space technology equipment - a combination of beautiful modeling and practicality.
